The Great Train Robbery (1903)

Regarded as the first Western, this early silent film has some interesting imagery including the infamous shot (above) where the bandit points his gun at the screen - later paid homage to by Martin Scorsese in Goodfellas.

I don't have too much to say about the plot, I can't say I was dragged in and taken by it. History suggests that this 12 minute short was extremely popular with audiences at the time and for that alone it rightly has a place on the 1001 Movies, even if it is a little too far removed for me to be invested in it.

BEST SCENE: The aforementioned bandit pointing his gun at the screen is rightly lauded as the best scene from this film.

RATING:  ★★ - Perhaps slightly harsh given the age of this film but it really did nothing for me.

  1. Again, this movie is mostly included for its historic significance. It practically invented the narrative in movies.
Scorcese does love his old movies.
